Shampoo thieves strike pharmacy twice in 24 hours

Two men have been arrested after shampoo thieves targeted a pharmacy twice in 24 hours, the Wanstead & Woodford Guardian reports.

Police were called to reports of shoplifting at Wanstead Pharmacy at around 5pm yesterday and 10.30 this morning (Thursday April 7).

A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged yesterday. He remains in custody.

Another man was arrested for shoplifting this morning but has not yet been charged.

The manager of the High Street pharmacy Ali Mashadi said members of staff tried to chase the thieves before police managed to restrain them.

GPs, community nurses and care workers set to benefit from £43m investment in primary care

General practice, community nursing and social care are set to benefit from a £43m cash injection from the Welsh Government, Wales Online reports.

The money will be invested over the next year to improve access to primary care and continue to move services out of hospitals and into communities.

The Welsh Government’s primary care plan, which was published in 2014, sets out a vision for enhancing services across Wales so the more care is planned and provided closer to people’s homes.

As part of the £43m package for 2016/17, £26m will be made available to health boards to help implement their local plans.

Spike in deaths 'due to dementia and flu'

A spike in the number of deaths in England and Wales last year was due to an increase in dementia and respiratory diseases such as flu among older people, according to official figures, the BBC reports.

The peak happened in the early months of 2015 when flu was common, according to the Office for National Statistics.

People with dementia were particularly vulnerable to flu, figures show.

2015 saw the largest rise in deaths in England and Wales in over a decade.

More than 1,500 patients have not signed up to a new GP after surgeries closed

More than 1,500 patients have yet to find a new GP after two city surgeries closed earlier this year, the Leicester Mercury reports.

In excess of 700 patients at The Maples Surgery, in Evington Road, and 855 patients at the Queens Road Medical Centre have not yet re-registered.

In a Leicester City clinical commissioning group primary care commissioning committee meeting on Tuesday, Jon Holliday, interim head of primary care commissioning, said that steps were being taken to encourage patients to sign up to new surgeries.

Healthcare company opens UK headquarters in Leeds

Healthcare 21 (HC21), one the UK and Ireland’s largest privately owned healthcare companies, has opened a UK headquarters in Leeds city centre with plans to almost double group turnover to €100m by the end of 2018, BDaily reports.

As part of these plans HC21 has just signed an agreement with Acelity, a global wound care and regenerative medicine company.

The agreement allows for the exclusive distribution of certain surgical portfolio products in Germany, Austria and Luxembourg.

The new Leeds office has been set up predominantly as a sales and marketing hub and has resulted in a number of key appointments including business development director David Plotts, who is tasked with spearheading continued UK and European growth.
